Artist Statement
During my stay in New York City, I had a part time job at a Christmas decoration company. We were required to work in luxury and high-end shops at midnight or during the early morning hours. We would often enter the building from some unnoticed, dark back doors. We would be bent over from the ceiling hanging ornaments or decorations looking down at many fancy closets and VIP rooms. I enjoyed watching the changing color of the sky and endless people flow outside of my window. This is where《Dear Miss Goodman》was born. She was delivered from a winter dress collection catalogue, from a local famous department store, Bergdorf Goodman.
My work is mainly about deconstructing the value of “Beauty” and “Authority.” Through the action of 【de-facing or losing face】, I not only display personal commentary upon public figures but also attempt to create some kind of ironic aesthetics. With the creation of monster-like faces, I attempt to regain control toward these images as well as bring questions of sexuality and the grotesque into sharp focus. In my recent work, the action of covering turns into cutting and deleting; meanwhile, I use my body images as the source of collage, inserting and placing them with the original shiny magazine pages. I am fascinated with the distance between real and printed skin. The characters of these figures keep changing and evolving into different forms and identities. The original magazine figures are too perfect and isolated to connect with. Therefore, I use my lively skin pieces to replace their prettiness and sweetness. The viewer can read every detail from my body at one glance, which gives a feeling of forceful violence and amazement as well as reveals the history and habit of my own body. 【Copy Fashion】is a project starting from 2011, which combines ready-made images with commentary mark-making and has an ongoing commitment to a publishing a series of new magazines. This exhibition will display all six issues of magazines for the first time, including No.1 《Miss Instyle》, No. 2 《Miss Lane Bryant》, No.3《Miss Glamour》, No.4 《Miss Choc》, No.5《Dear Miss Goodman》, and the latest one, No. 6 《Dear Miss ShangHai Tang》. Each issue reflects the living environment and cultural context which embraces me. Through the communication between images and the painting, I project my doubt about consumption and fashion while at the same time seeking to find the true face of the subjects that I deface. |
