About the ExhibitionThe Emperor's Songs Without Words Op. 1This solo exhibition will include all the works composed from 2014 to 2017, taking a broad view of the works while sorting through the entire body of work by exploring Taiwan's position in international affairs and societal contradictions and conflicts.
"Sound Portraits" uses musical notes to paint a portrait of Taiwanese heads of state, combining the significant links between them with a background of Taiwanese music. With "the Emperor" as the topic, one can discuss the rational absurdity of societal politics extending from the community of artists to the compositions of other countries' leaders. "The Emperor's Songs Without Words Op. 1" takes its name from the cultural context, while "Songs Without Words" originates from the style of the 19th Century European artist Felix Mendelssohn's pioneering musical works which did not include any lyrics and instead was an interpretation of the composer's emotional state at that time or just implemented numbers to replace words. A lack of words should, therefore, not be confused with a lack of language or having no words to say. Through the personal accounts that are found just beneath the surface of politics and commonly discussed societal affairs one can discover the formless double edge sword in their back. The work that will be performed today, "Sound Portrait" is a two part series: the 2014 installment of "The Taiwan Set" and the concert hall live vocal performance of the Madman's Sound Portrait "Echo". All of which reveal the fusion of visual and musical art by using the two manifestations of classical interpretive possibilities found in "Sound Portraits" to expand the methods of expression in classical music and visual art. Constructed on the base of classical art and revealed using modern techniques, these works embody the convergence of time, the convergence of art forms, and the convergence of historical works. |
