STATEMENT
This work is inspired by quotidian experiences. The artist often starts daydreaming unknowingly, which allows him to separate himself from the surroundings and wander in dreamlike moments. Only a sudden jolt can wake him and bring him back to reality. In the process of daydreaming, the artist enters a different mode of thinking, which stems from his lifestyle, or even projections of reality. This work makes use of the spatial characteristics of the exhibition room, based on which the artist thinks about how to create a site for "escaping reality" and "daydreaming." He utilizes the approach of "sculpting" space to alter the quality of the white- box space, and constructs a space concocted by his imagination, thus responding to the state of "daydreaming." Instead of discussing the content, he focuses on the action of "daydreaming," which is a pathway that has no starting point nor end.
HSIEH Chi-Hsun
Hsieh Chi-Hsun holds a BFA in Sculpture from the National Taiwan University of Arts. He is currently studying for his MFA at the Taipei National University of the Arts. Hsieh’s art practice concentrates on responding to existing spaces. In addition to approaching the reality in front of our eyes and departing from a general way of viewing artworks, he brings artistic creation and reality into a new totality. By applying sculptural logic to construct an imaginary space of perception, he offers spectators a sense of satisfaction as if they were personally in the space, and guides people into a darker-than-shadow space. His recent exhibitions include On my way (Pier-2 Art Center, Kaohsiung; 2022); Flowturn (Serendipity Art Space, Taipei; 2022); HAIKU–Sculpture: International Exchange Exhibition for Asian Art Universities in Taiwan (Daguan Gallery, Taipei; 2021); and Uncertain Sculptures (Bopiliao Historic Block, Taipei; 2020). Hsieh has received various awards and honors, including the Selected prize at Taipei Art Awards(2022); Honorable Mention and Special Award at Contemporary Sculpture Lih Pao Prize (2020; 2019); the Selected prize (Sculpture) at the National Art Exhibition, R.O.C. (2019); the Bronze Medal (Metal Sculpture) at Sculpture Festival by Daguan Gallery.
