Statement
Between frequent relocations, the body, as if never landing, lingers in the process of moving around. When the body carries the old space into a new one, my perception of space falls into the chaotic mingling of memory and reality. In the slow relocation process, the middle ground, the body and mind form a place for shelter. I repeatedly attempt to picture the structure of this comfortable place for which I hope to give a name and establish a rational and practical passageway for further travel. After closely examining the different possibilities of approaching this abstract concept of a place, I have realised that the pursuit of imagery, spiritual, and poetic imagination comes from my body’s strong attachment to the physical space.
To get close, I reflect on my connection with different spaces, regularly examining both the physical and emotional experience to grasp an internal order which follows wherever I go. Perhaps the concept is similar to packing. The step-by-step process of remembering, imagining, internalising and realising a space resembles organising, categorising, storing and packing things. With art as the approach, the exhibition observes the connection between people and space, repeatedly playing back memories and writing inventions. The Ways to Pack explores a passageway based on past emotion, experience, and awareness, compressing bodily sensations from the slow process of relocations into flashing moments while transforming geographical locations into spiritual spaces. In a subtle narration composed of installations, videos, sounds, and objects, the exhibition packs up the complex emotions and memories of places into the body. It exercises the migration of bodily sensations while presenting existing spatial awareness.

Artist|Jui-Tsz shiu
The creative practice employs spacial installation, video and sculpture to interpret physical spaces and memories tied with bodily sensations. Through observation of flowing impressions and the projection of present reality, the artist takes either fictional or physical actions to summon the passageway for experience and imagination. Her recent works explore the mental process of those moving from one place to another, taking material elements as symbols and metaphors for spirituality.
